Citrix Director Overview for Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops provide two purpose-built consoles, Studio and Director, which do most of the management and monitoring work for you. Our simplified approach to IT also provides:

- Delegated control so admin teams ensure the right level of user access
- Integration with market-leading monitoring technologies, including Microsoft System Center and offerings from Citrix Ready vendors

Manage and configure with Citrix Studio
Studio is the primary management console for administering Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops sites. This intuitive Windows console is used for tasks such as initial site setup, machine provisioning, and app and desktop publishing.
Use Studio to:
- Deliver applications to users through just two guided screens.
- Provision hundreds or thousands of machines from a golden image through five simple, guided screens.
- Delegate administration to ensure control over relevant objects with appropriate permissions.
- Administer your environment from most Windows machines, or access it as a published app or within a published desktop.
Monitor and troubleshoot with Citrix Director
Director is the daily virtualization management console for routine tasks in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. This modern, web-based console is used by administrators and help desk staff for typical management and monitoring activities, such as viewing and controlling user sessions, reporting on environment usage, and notification and alerting.
Use Director to:
- Quickly identify the features, such as audio and drive mapping, that are available within sessions.
- Pinpoint machine failures and shadow users who need assistance.
- Connect to multiple sites through a single instance of Director.
Integration with Citrix ADC HDX Insight offers detailed, network-level metrics related to user sessions. And integration with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) surfaces key alerts for improved infrastructure visibility.
With Citrix Director, we were able to see what's causing slow login times … and we narrowed it down to a group policy setting with trusted sites in Internet Explorer; once we rewrote that group policy using a newer ADM template, our login times reduced dramatically.
Enable comprehensive visibility into the Citrix delivery infrastructure with the SCOM Management Bundle
The Citrix SCOM Management Bundle for Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops includes management packs for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) to further extend the core monitoring capabilities. Available exclusively in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Platinum, these packs enable comprehensive visibility into the Citrix delivery infrastructure.
Use the SCOM Management Bundle to:
- Visualize Citrix components and their respective statuses through a topology view.
- Prevent, pinpoint, and quickly resolve issues through a Health Explorer.
- Gain insight with comprehensive reporting for areas such as user session details, performance tracking and resource utilization.
With Citrix XenDesktop we have been able to reduce the administrative nightmares we’ve had in the past by having a single image. Updating one image on one server versus many images on many servers has saved us hours of time when performing upgrades and other administrative tasks.
